What is a No Scalpel Vasectomy?
A no scalpel vasectomy is a permanent form of contraception for men. This minimally invasive procedure works by blocking the sperm from leaving the testicles. This is achieved by making a very small incision (approx. 4mm) in the scrotum and carefully removing a section of each vas deferens which is the tube that transfers sperm from the testicles. The vas deferens are each sealed using heat before they are returned to the scrotum. The small incision does not require any stitches and is simply covered with gauze and left to heal. This is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure with a fast recovery time.
- Quick and minimally invasive
- No stitches or major scarring
- Back to normal within days

The Snip Explained
Have you ever heard of the vasectomy procedure referred to as “The Snip”? This is because the procedure involves severing, or “snipping”, the two tubes called the vas deferens that carry sperm from the testicles.
At Precision Vasectomy, we perform the more modern and less invasive no-scalpel vasectomy approach that involves removing a small section from each of the vas deferens tubes and cauterising the end so that no sperm can travel from the testicles out of the penis.
Did you know?
“The Snip” is just another name for vasectomy. Today’s no-scalpel method is faster and easier than ever.

The Vasectomy Surgical Procedure
The No Scalpel Procedure
The procedure begins with a brief examination for any abnormalities that could complicate the procedure and then the skin is thoroughly disinfected, and a sterile drape is placed around the area. Before the procedure begins, a small amount of local anaesthetic is injected near and into the vas deferens. This is the only pain you will feel during the procedure and is similar to a vaccine or blood test.
How the No-Scalpel Method Works
The no-scalpel method works by creating a very small (approx. 4mm) opening in the scrotum. Each tube is carefully pulled through this opening, and a small section of the tube (approx. 5-10mm) is removed and the ends are carefully sealed using heat. The tubes then gently fall back into place and the small opening in the skin does not require stitches, and will heal on its own.
What to Expect During the Procedure
All of our no scalpel vasectomy procedures are performed at our discreet and comfortable clinic in Blackrock. The procedure is quick and pain free. It takes approximately 20-30 minutes and after the local anaesthetic has been applied, patients will feel little to no pain. Patients are completely numb but awake for the entire procedure which is performed by Dr. Irwin.
After the Procedure - What to expect
You should not drive after the procedure so make sure that someone is available to drive you home. Spend the day after the procedure resting at home. You will remove the dressing pad over the wound after 24 hours and apply Vaseline to the area daily for a week after to aid healing. Should you experience any pain after the fact, paracetamol or ibuprofen should be enough to relieve your discomfort. You should avoid heavy lifting, sports, and sexual activity for the week following the procedure.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about the no scalpel procedure? Read through some of the most commonly asked questions below or visit our FAQ page.
What is a No Scalpel Vasectomy?
A no scalpel vasectomy is a minimally invasive, permanent form of contraception for men. It involves making a very small opening in the scrotum, bringing each vas deferens through that opening, removing a small section, sealing the ends with heat, and allowing them to return inside. No stitches are required, and the incision heals naturally.
Is the Procedure Painful?
Before the procedure begins, a small amount of local anaesthetic is injected into and near the vas deferens. This feels similar to a vaccine or blood test. Once the area is numb, you should not feel pain and most men describe only slight pressure or tugging.
How Long Does the Procedure Take?
The procedure itself typically takes around 20-30 minutes from start to finish.
What is the Recovery Time After a Vasectomy?
Most men return to light or office-based work within 1–2 days. You should rest for the first 24–48 hours and avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activity, and sexual activity for about a week to support proper healing.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Common side effects include slight bruising, mild swelling, or some discomfort. These are usually short-lived. Less common side effects can include infection, internal bleeding (haematoma), failure, prolonged pain, blood stained semen, or small lumps known as sperm granulomas.
What Happens if I Change My Mind After the Procedure?
A vasectomy is considered a permanent form of contraception. While reversal procedures exist, they are not guaranteed to work, so the decision should be made with the understanding that it is permanent.
How Much Does a No Scalpel Vasectomy Cost?
The total cost is €599. This includes the procedure itself, and the semen analysis performed 3–4 months later to confirm success. If an additional semen analysis is required, it may incur an extra cost.
Will It Affect My Sexual Function?
No, a vasectomy only prevents sperm from entering the semen. It does not affect hormones, libido, erections, ejaculation, or overall sexual performance.
How Soon Can I Resume Sexual Activity?
You should avoid sexual activity for at least one week after the procedure. Even once you resume, you must continue using contraception until your semen analysis confirms that no sperm are present.
