The Benefits of Vasectomy: Why More Men in Cork Are Choosing “The Snip”

Year after year, more and more men are seeing the benefits of vasectomy, or “the snip” in Cork and getting the procedure done. From our own experience in clinical practice as a leading vasectomy specialist and Vasectomy SSM-accredited GP in Cork, this is certainly the case.

Perhaps you’re wondering: why choose a vasectomy over other forms of contraception? What sorts of benefits does a vasectomy have for your personal and family life, and why are so many men getting one?

It’s One of the Most Reliable Forms of Contraception Available

Aside from abstinence, a vasectomy is the most reliable form of contraception available. It has a failure rate of around 1 in 2,000-2,500, which makes it 10x more effective than female sterilisation, according to the College of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare

Male sterilisation in Cork allows couples to engage in sexual intercourse, without the fear of pregnancy. That means there’s no need to worry about your female partner forgetting to take the pill and no need to renew prescriptions. Your sexual activity can continue without the need for any other forms of contraception, many of which can be quite expensive. You can see our vasectomy pricing here and remember that it’s a one-time expense that pays off for the rest of your life.

The Procedure Is Much More Straightforward Than Most Men Expect

One common red thread we see at Precision Vasectomy with many of our patients is that there is a big gap between what many men initially assume and what actually happens during a vasectomy procedure. The no-scalpel vasectomy method is almost pain-free and very straightforward. Patients are given a local anaesthetic to numb the area, then a tiny puncture is made, and the “snip” is performed. The entire procedure usually takes 15-20 minutes. It’s done on an outpatient basis, so you can go home right afterwards. Learn more about how the procedure works for a more detailed walkthrough.

After the procedure, an awful lot of men tell us that it was much less of an ordeal than they had anticipated.

Recovery Is Minimal for Most Men

One of the biggest benefits of vasectomy is that it’s a quick procedure with a short recovery time, no matter what naysayers might claim online. For most men, it usually takes about 2-3 days to recover, making it ideal for a Friday so that you can rest and recover over the weekend and not miss a day of work.

My patients usually recover in this recovery timeline, but every man has a different pace of recovery, and it could sometimes take a few days longer, perhaps a week. We generally advise against physically intensive labour, strenuous lifting or exercise for about a week, but otherwise you can get back to daily life very quickly.

It Has No Effect on Sexual Function or Testosterone

One of the biggest vasectomy myths we have to dispel with our patients is that a vasectomy negatively affects their testosterone or reduces sexual function. Neither of these is true at all. Naturally, this has been included in our common concerns and myths about vasectomies.

The procedure only affects the sperm-carrying capacity of your testicles. It has no effect whatsoever on the hormonal glands, nerves, or blood vessels, so there is no change to sexual function. You will still feel just as masculine after the procedure as you did before.

Actually, it’s often the case that patients tell us they enjoy better sexual intercourse. There’s more spontaneity, no worry of pregnancy, and no anxiety around contraception.

It Shifts the Contraceptive Responsibility in a Meaningful Way

It’s been the case for quite a long time now that contraception was overwhelmingly the responsibility of the female partner. Hormonal contraception has its own side effects, and the pill is not completely reliable. Vasectomy is a practical, considerate way for the male partner to take the lead in contraception and family planning.

Couples come to us quite often, telling me how it’s made a great, positive change in their daily lives. Often, the female partner feels a sense of relief and appreciation that her male partner is taking the lead on contraception.

If you’re wondering how a vasectomy stacks up to the many other forms of contraception, we encourage you to see our contraception comparison for yourself to see just how effective it is.
